American Eagle Outfitters: On June 14, 2014 this retailer will be officially a closed loop textile recycling company with programs in all 823 stores in the United States and Canada. The recycling program begins by providing customers with an opportunity to drop off unwanted clothing, shoes and textiles of any style or brand, not just American Eagle. After making the donation, they will also receive $5 off coupon.

This successful program has consistently expanded greatly from its start with a small donation box at its San Francisco store. Now the recycling program has included over 60 other brands such as Levi Strauss & Co., Footlocker, Forever21, and Puma. By the year 2020, American Eagle wants 100% of its textiles to be recycled but is only currently converting at 30%. Producing just a single T-shirt can waste over 30,000 liters of water, so this program is definitely doing a lot of good for the world

Microsoft: Electronic waste is a major issue facing our society, so it is refreshing to see that a company that is creating those electronics is taking an active role in solving the problem. Microsoft is the founding member of R2 Leaders, a major group committed to responsibly recycling unwanted electronics. A huge development of the R2 Leaders was creating a strict standard of handing and disposing electronics to help ensure safety. Currently, the R2 Leaders has set these environmental standards at over 540 facilities in 17 countries.

With over 150 million cell phones being disposed every year and less than 10% of them being properly recycled, Microsoft has their work cut out for them. There are many programs in the works to increase recycling rates and Microsoft is leading the charge to help minimize the contamination of electronics on our environment. It will definitely take a collective effort to accomplish the goals of the R2 Leaders.
