One of my favorite things about Christmas morning is picking through my stocking to see what kind of goodies I received. One of my favorite items is what I find at the toe of the stocking, and that is an orange. Receiving an orange in your stocking is a tradition in my family. The slices of an orange represent the ability to share what you have with others. So, if you’re like me, you’ve probably had the same stocking for many years. Instead of buying a new stocking, I’m here to show you how you can upcycle an old sweater and turn it into a stocking.
Materials you will need:
- Old Stocking or Template
- Large Sweater
- Fabric Scissors
- Cotton fabric
- Sewing Machine or Needle and Thread
Create a pattern for the shape you want to cut out. One idea is to print out a pattern and place it on cotton fabric to cut out a shape you want or you can just use an old stocking. You will end up using the fabric for lining.
Place the pattern in the middle of the sweater. Cut through the front and back of the sweater to give you the two panels of the stocking. Also cut two lining pieces out of your fabric pattern.
Once you have two pieces of the sweater, place the front and back together and sew the two pieces. Remember to only sew around the edges and not the top edge.
Turn the stocking right-side out and press the sides with your finger.
Place the two pieces of lining on the front and back of the sweater. Sew around the edges leaving a 5” opening along the bottom of the foot for turning.
Next, be sure to slip the lining around the outside of the exterior of your stocking. Match up the side seams along the top edge, pin together, and sew around the top edge. Now turn it right-side out through the opening that you didn’t sew together.
Sew the opening closed and use your finger to push all the inside edges out.
Turn the stocking right-side out through the bottom opening of your lining near the foot. Stitch around the top edge to secure the lining.
Now you have yourself an upcycled sweater stocking. There are many ways you can be creative. Choose different colors and materials of sweaters. If you have little kids, you can use their old sweaters to make the perfect size stocking for them!
