As if we needed another reason to love Google even more, now they are cutting ties with companies who refuse to accept climate change. Google was in partnership with a political organization known as American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC as a part of a lobbying campaign. This organization is known for denying climate change and Google will not be renewing their membership with ALEC at the end of this year due to their stance on this issue.

Eric Schmidt, who is the chairman of Google Inc., announced the other day that they will break ties with ALEC and they will welcome new climates who care about the climate. Schmidt was very clear about his feelings towards ALEC’s views, here is a transcript of his comments from the National Journal about the climate change denying company:

“Well, the company has a very strong view that we should make decisions in politics based on facts—what a shock,” Schmidt said. “And the facts of climate change are not in question anymore. Everyone understands climate change is occurring, and the people who oppose it are really hurting our children and our grandchildren and making the world a much worse place. And so we should not be aligned with such people—they’re just, they’re just literally lying.”

Google has paved the way for companies to stand up for their beliefs and cut off ties with organizations that deny climate change. Usually, organizations that promote denial of climate change are geared towards a political or religious bias. When Google paired with ALEC, they paid the company about $10,000 a year to create a group to discuss broadband, privacy and e-commerce issues. ALEC’s chief executive officer, Lisa Nelson, is stated as saying:

“It is unfortunate to learn Google has ended its membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council as a result of public pressure from left-leaning individuals and organizations who intentionally confuse free market policy perspectives for climate change denial.”

Environmentalists have long been asking Google to cut ties with ALEC and Google has now decided to make a change for the better. Google will now be the second large company to cancel their partnership with ALEC, since Microsoft did so in July of this year. ALEC has worked to kill renewable energy programs and they have fought to teach climate denial in schools.

Google is still not completely back in good graces with all environmentalists because they have contributed about $700,000 to political candidates who deny human-caused climate change. But, they are taking the necessary step in stopping with partnering with ALEC. Google has invested more than $1 billion for clean energy projects such as wind and solar energy powered data centers. Google also claims to have a carbon footprint of zero.

Google is currently using renewable energy to power about 35% of their operations. They are constantly looking for new innovative technologies to use in their office and power their data centers. Google aims to power their company with 100% renewable energy in the future. They have invested large amounts of money to create a clean energy future that’s better for their business as well as better for the environment for future generations.

We applaud Google for making strides towards environmental change and breaking ties with organizations committed to denying human-caused climate change.
