If you’re planning a major home remodel or renovation, do you really need to go out and buy a chainsaw or power drill? Why should you have to buy a power tool that you’ll realistically only use about once or twice a year? Thanks to a new app named Peerby, people can connect with others in their area who have power tools and are willing to share.
Peerby stands for peer to peer nearby and comes to us from the Netherlands. The app is not yet available for the US but it should be later this year. Peerby users can enter what tools they have to share and where they are located, as well as enter what they would like to borrow. Sharing these items cuts back on unnecessary spending while promoting a greener lifestyle and less waste.
The app was launched in the Netherlands in 2012 and since then, there are nearly 100,000 Peerby users in The Netherlands, Belgium, London and Berlin with thousands of transactions occurring every month. In 2012, Peerby was selected as the best urban app in the AppMyCity! competition. The borrowing app has helped thousands of people to connect and share their tools.
Speaking to NPR, Peerby founder, Daan Weddepohl, said that, “People are social animals. We like to help each other out. Borrowing things is probably one of the oldest behaviors in nature, and we are just making it easier through technology. We created a platform that makes it easy for people to find that neighbor that’s willing to lend what they need.”
You can borrow over 4000 different products from people who live within 30 minutes of you. Users love Peerby because it is a super convenient way of getting their hands on things they only need once a month or even less; and according to Peerby’s website 80% of the things we own are used no more than once a month. The app also allows for people to connect with neighbors who they may have never met on their own.
Let’s say you’re building a swing set for your kids and you need a chainsaw, you can go out and spend $300 on a chainsaw you’ll use about once a year or you can borrow one for free from someone near you. The answer is simple, Peerby is a great way for neighbors to connect, share and live green. Sharing helps us make better use of our resources, which in turn creates less waste.
One of the best aspects of this app is it’s free! Whether you need to borrow a pressure washer for 30 minutes or a chainsaw for a day, Peerby is the place to go. To join Peerby, simply download the app onto your smartphone and enter your name, email address and your postal address, you can then see if there are any users near your area and you can request items.
