This blog has very little to do with roll off dumpster rentals and removing waste but is so intriguing it had to be addressed. Actually maybe it does have a little to do with waste, a different type of waste, your WAISTline. Promotion of a healthy lifestyle is evident around the world and places are finding interesting ways to increase involvement.

Moscow, Russia is the latest example of that and has found a way to combine green and healthy living. The Russian subway has begun giving away rides free of charge, well not exactly free. Subway riders are able to perform 30 squats in exchange for a one-way pass that would normally cost about a dollar.

A contraption similar to a vending machine uses various sensors to track the subway rider throughout their 30 squats. After completing them in less than 2 minutes, it produces the virtually free ticket and its just that simple.

This is one of the many initiatives by Russian government to encourage sustainability and fitness as we approach the Olympic games in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

“We wanted to show that the Olympic Games is not just an international competition that people watch on TV, but that it is also about getting everyone involved in a sporting lifestyle,” Alexander Zhukov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee

More squat machines, stationary bikes that produce electricity to charge devices and exercise bands on buses plan to be implemented throughout the city before the New Year.

These ideas are very progressive, but it is very unlikely these would work in the United States. I feel people would rather pay the dollar instead of subjecting themselves to squats in front of crowd. However, I know I would not be paying for the subway anymore.
