New York- Along with banning E-cigarettes, New York’s City Council unanimously voted against the use of Styrofoam containers. This is the largest United States ban against the single use containers.
New Yorkers dispose of 23,000 tons of this product every year. This will not only cut down on waste but also solve many problems that this product creates in landfills.
“Most foam ends up in landfills where it can sit for literally 500 years or longer,” Christine Quinn said. “The only thing in the world that lives longer than cockroaches or Cher is Styrofoam.”
iPotty- The iPotty won the award for worst toy of the year with 45% of the total. This product combines children’s toilet and an iPad.
“The iPotty is a perfect example of marketers trying to create a need where none exists. In fact, the last thing children need is a screen for every single occasion.” Says Dr. Susan Linn.
This also receives the worst waste remover of the year honors from Budget Dumpster even though it is an effective waste remover.
Northern Ireland- Many have heard of organized crime but not many have heard of organized waste crime. This is a major issue facing Northern Ireland Environment Agency after recently uncovering 516,000 tons of illegal dumping.
Although officials were able to make 2 arrests, they believe the true culprits are still at large and that more waste will be uncovered. In one report, it claims that ‘tens of millions of pounds’ of waste is still somewhere within the country limits.
