If you are an avid reader of our blog then you have read our DIY post on upcycling your t-shirts into napkins. So bring out your old t-shirts again because we have a new upcycling project that we think you will enjoy. When decorating your house, one accessory that is often over-looked is a rug. People place complementary rugs outside doorways and in rooms. Here is a great way to upcycle your t-shirts to make a complementary rug for your home.
Supplies You Will Need:
- Plenty of Colorful Old T-shirts
- Sharp Scissors/Rotary Cutter
- Needle and Thread
Cut the t-shirts into 2 inch strips. Be sure the strips aren’t too long because it will make braiding more difficult.
Tip: Don’t cut less than 2 inches, you will need the bulk to keep the rug from bubbling when you stitch it.
Start braiding! A good idea is to tie on a new strip when one gets to the end, making sure to vary where the knots are so there isn’t a huge bump in the completed rug.
Tip: Curl up your braids every once in a while to see how big your rug is getting. Then you can decide how many more braids you want to make.
When you have quite a bit of length of braided t-shirt, begin stitching it together, working from the back and doing a simple whip stitch between the two pieces of braid.
Tip: If you choose to do an oval shape, fold over the first section of braided t-shirt and stitch it together, wrapping around and stitching after that.
Keep stitching! Be sure you are working on a flat surface to ensure that the rug lays flat. Remember to sew down the end of the braid.
Now you have upcycled your t-shirts into a new decoration. Pick a spot in your house and enjoy! Be sure to visit back to our DIY category to see if we post any more ways to upcycle old t-shirts.
