Do you currently have t-shirts that your kids are growing out of or old t-shirts from your high school days that are just sitting in boxes in your basement? One solution could be donating those old clothes, but why not turn those old t-shirts into something you can use every day? Something you may commonly use every day is a paper napkin at the dinner table. Here’s a great way to upcycle your t-shirts and replace paper napkins with cloth ones.
Supplies You Will Need
- Old T-shirts
- Sewing Machine
- Rotary Cutter & Mat
Cut two squares out of a t-shirt using the rotary cutter and mat.
This example is using a 12.5 inch square cutting guide, however, you can make yours as big or small as you want.
Place the t-shirt squares together and line up the edges.
Sew around the two squares using a 1/4 seam allowance. Be sure to leave 2-3 inch opening for turning.
Tip: Start in the middle of one side and stop 2-3 inches from your starting point after you have made it around all of the other sides.
Clip the edges off of each corner.
Turn the napkin right side out and turn the edges of the opening under and then press the napkin.
Using a stitch of your choice, sew around all four sides of the napkin.
Now you have made yourself a cloth napkin. This is just one way to upcycle an old t-shirt. Other upcycling ideas may include blankets, bags or decorations around the house. So before you think to donate those old clothes in your closet or basement, try upcycling!
