Not only is dishwasher detergent expensive, but it often contains chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Save yourself some money and make your own detergent with just a few ingredients you can find around the house.

Here’s what you will need:

Ice cube trays, Borax (1 cup), Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (1 cup), Epsom Salt (1/4 cup), Lemon Juice, Newspaper (or anything to cover your work space), and two bowls for mixing

Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Lay out newspaper over your work space. This will allow for quick and easy cleanup once your detergent is complete.

Step 2: Measure our and mix all the powder ingredients together in a bowl. Mix them up good to evenly distribute all the ingredients. If you don’t want to include Borax, you can eliminate it from the ingredients. It won’t mess anything up. If you want to make more, you can double (or triple!) the recipe for the amount of powder you mix together.

Step 3: Once it is all mixed, scoop out one cup and put it in a separate bowl. This will make it easier to work with.

Step 4: Add lemon juice to the mixture. The mixture will start to bubble. You don’ want it to be dry, but you don’t want it to be runny either. Aim for a sticky consistency. You can add a little bit of lemon juice at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. 4 Tablespoons is usually a good amount.

Step 5: Once the mixture is a good consistency, scoop it into the ice cube trays. If you have small ice cube trays, you can fill them up completely. However, if the ice cube compartments are larger, we recommend only filling them up about half way. Otherwise, the cube might be too big to fit into the dishwasher!

Step 6: Leave your detergent cubes out to dry overnight! Once they are completely dry, they should pop out fairly easily… just like ice cubes do!

Step 7: Voila! Load up your dish waster and pop in one of your homemade detergent cubes!
