Fall time is nearing, which means you might soon be finding your lawn covered with leaves and twigs that fall from the trees above. Instead of throwing them out, consider using twigs for arts and crafts projects that will add some warm decorations to your home.

Here’s what you will need for a twig flower vase:

  • Twigs
  • Hand saw
  • Empty coffee can
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Adhesive / Hot glue gun
  • Twine
  • Raffia ribbon (or other ribbon)
  • Potting soil
  • Flowers

Step 1: Collect Twigs

Go out into your yard and collect stray twigs to use for your project. For small flowerpots, thin twigs are usually best, but they can vary in size and thickness.

Step 2: Find Your Pot

Decide what size you want your flower pot to be and keep an eye out for  usable cans. An empty coffee can is a great option (plus they come in different sizes). Or, you could go with an empty soup can for something smaller.

Step 3: Attach Cloth or Ribbon

You’ll want to decorate the surface area of your can or jar, because once the twigs are attached, there will be gaps where the can is exposed. Use sturdy glue or a hot glue gun to wrap and secure cloth or ribbon around the can.

Step 4: Saw Twigs

Pick out the best looking twigs that are the desired width. You cut them to be all the same length, or have them vary in length for a different look.

Step 5: Tie the Twigs Together

Using the twine, line up the twigs and tie them together. Start with one twig and two pieces of twine. Tie a knot at the top with one piece of twine and a knot at the bottom with the other. Attach the next twig at the top and bottom and continue until you get a long strand of twigs.

Step 5: Attach the Twigs

Tie enough twigs together so that your strand can fully wrap around the can. Once that desired length has been reached, tie the end of the thread in a knot so it won’t unravel and secure the twigs around the can. We suggest using a sturdy glue or a hot glue gun.

Step 6: Add any Additional Ribbons

Give your planter a little extra flair with some raffia or colorful ribbon tied around the middle of the can.

Step 7: Plant Flowers

Gather up potting soil and some beautiful flowers. Use your beautiful new vase to give these flowers a new home.

Step 8: Display!

Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of an upcycled twig vase! What a great way to put an old can and twigs to use instead of throwing them out.
