Finding the Perfect Place for Your Parents and Helping Them Move

Helping your parent’s transition into assisted living can be a difficult time for both you and your parents. The best way to get started with the process is to start talking with them as early as possible. Having an open dialogue is important when it comes to change and asking what their preferences may be.

When the time comes to actually transfer your parents into an assisted living room, there is still work to do. You will need to go through their home and get it ready to be sold, or at least help them clean it out before they move into their new place. This can be a difficult process especially if your parents have a lot of things they need or want to keep for sentimental reasons.

Helping Your Parents Move

Helping Your Parents Move in Austin

After you’ve found the perfect place for your parents, the first step you need to take when cleaning out their home and helping them move into assisted living is to walk through the home with your parents. Find out what they want to take to the new place with them and ask what they would like to keep in storage. Make sure you ask the retirement community what will be provided for them at their new place because they may not need to bring things such as furniture or cooking utensils.

When it comes to throwing stuff away, you may want to leave that for the last step. We often work with people cleaning up after a hoarder, whether it’s their parent or another relative, and it’s always important to be gentle with them while going through their stuff. Even if your parent isn’t a hoarder, it’s always a good idea to go through their possessions slowly and methodically to keep stress to a minimum. Additionally, make a list of everything they want to take with them while you are going through everything. This will come in handy very soon after.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Moving Your Parents in Austin

Cleaning out a home is a big job and your family members will most likely want to help you with this project. Give everyone a job and make sure they know what is going to the new place, what is going in storage, and what is being thrown out. Divide your volunteers into 3 different teams:

  • Team 1: People who will be taking stuff to the new place.
  • Team 2: People taking stuff to storage.
  • Team 3: People throwing stuff away.

Label Everything

The easiest way to make sure everything ends up where it needs to be is to label everything. Use different colored labels for where things will be going. For example, I would use pink Post-its for what is going to the new place, blue for storage, and yellow for trash.

Start Front to Back

Another tip is to start with the rooms at the front of the home and clear those out first. This is especially helpful if you are cleaning up after a hoarder because it will keep you from tripping over stuff while you are taking things out of the home.
