Unless, you work in logistics, the only time you may see shipping containers is when they’re stacked on ships moving across the ocean or on trains chugging across the country. But one real estate company in Detroit, known as Three Squared, is aiming to change that by showing society how shipping containers can be a great alternative to conventional building construction.
Turning shipping containers into homes has become a popular housing option in California and Arizona. Now, Michigan and the city of Detroit have been catching on with the help of the brother and sister team, Leslie and Patric Horn, founders of Three Squared. When the Horn’s learned about the idea of using shipping containers for construction, they were hooked. Why? Because there are many benefits to building a home out of a shipping container including improved energy efficiency, money-savings, and time you need.
Three Squared’s buildings increase their energy efficiency by utilizing sustainable insulation. Since steel is a great insulator of temperature, the company is able to increase the R-value, a measure of thermal resistance used in a building. With the building methods Three Squared uses, shipping container homes generally cost half as much as construction methods and takes half as long to build.
The first project the company notched under its belt was the Trumbull Model Center, located two blocks from the old Tiger Stadium near Detroit’s North Corktown neighborhood. This up and coming area surrounded by people with a keen interest in the project, was a perfect fit for this unique construction. The Model Center consists of nine shipping containers that forms into a three-story unit. The first unit has 2,880 total square feet and was framed in less than six hours, requiring only 45 days in total construction time.
Another project, still in the beginning stages, is the Detroit Shipyard located in Midtown between Cass and 2nd Avenue. Once it’s completed, the Shipyard will be the hottest culinary offering in the area. It plans to utilize Three Squared’s designs for its restaurant hub and beer garden, described as a “Beer garden, meets food truck convention, meets work of art.”
In December 2015, Three Squared was selected to be a vendor for the Port Authority/Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Project. The company will be building an interactive kiosk along the river highlighting the international waterway. “This project plays a key role in the multiyear effort the city has (undergone) to develop the riverfront into a global attraction. Our work will assist the city with their effort to promote international commerce,” Leslie Horn, CEO of Three Squared, Inc. said.

With the help of Three Squared, The Motor City is going to be known for much more than being the country’s automotive center. Leslie, Patric and their team are giving residents an opportunity to build with character and style; bring your imagination and they will supply the container.
