Oklahoma City is known for its western charm along with its lively entertainment district. It’s home of the professional basketball team, Oklahoma City Thunder as well as a venue for real-life cowboys and cowgirls to show off their roping and riding skills at the national and championship horse shows. I’m going to inform you on the variety of places to visit for your next weekend out or vacation.

Beautiful Sunset at Redrock Canyon Grill

To begin our journey, I’m going to start out by satisfying your hunger. There are two restaurants I recommend that I think anyone will enjoy. If you are a long-term resident, you may have heard of them. The first one is Redrock Canyon Grill. It is located on Lake Hefner and has amazing views. I suggest eating there around sunset. The restaurant faces Northwest and the view is breathtaking. But don’t just go for the view! The menu is a combination of Southwest and American cuisine. If you have a chance to visit, be sure to try a mouth-watering steak and a fresh salad.

If you don’t want to dine at Redrock Canyon Grill, that’s okay! Another casual dining choice is right down the street. Hefner Grill has the same breathtaking view as Redrock Canyon. The menu has a variety of hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood. When you dine here there’s a good chance you will be accompanied by live music. It provides a great atmosphere for a date or a night out with friends and family.

So, you enjoyed the view of Lake Hefner at one of those lovely restaurants, but how about you experience it first-hand? Lake Hefner is one of the best locations in central Oklahoma for bird watching. Water bird species stop along the 17-mile shoreline during their annual migrations.  There are weekend boat races held from April to October. You can join the Oklahoma City Boat Club that is located on the east shore, which hosts several open charity regattas and conducts races open to the public.

If you want to experience a little bit of Asia in the middle of Oklahoma, then you need to make a stop at the Oklahoma City Zoo. In 2011, the Zoo opened up the largest Asian Elephant exhibit in the country. The next phase is a new habitat for a rhino collection along with red pandas and several other species. If you can’t make it to Africa or Thailand, why not experience these species right in the middle of Oklahoma?
